I’ve used a lot of trailer coupler locks over the years, and most of them just don’t hold up once you put real tools on them. That’s why I was impressed when Altor brought the ICON lock into the shop. They cut through a popular brand in seconds, but when they tried the grinder on the ICON it barely made a scratch. I like that the heavy cast steel with its fin design forces a grinder to fight through layers before it ever gets close to the core, and the spinning face makes drilling almost pointless. My favorite part is that ICON builds each lock for specific couplers, so the fit is snug and secure instead of leaving gaps a thief could exploit. Add in the weather-sealed stainless body and keys that can’t be copied, and you’ve got a lock that’s on a whole different level from the ones I’ve tested before.

I was impressed with how the ICON Trailer Coupler Lock AL43DQ stands up to real theft attempts on a heavy trailer. It’s a solid cast steel design that slides over a Hit-N-Hitch 2-5/16-inch coupler and makes it extremely difficult for thieves to hook up and drive off. I like how the raised fins aren’t just for looks, they make it tough for a grinder or saw to even get a grip. My favorite part is the lock core, because instead of tiny pins and springs that freeze or jam, it uses rotating plates that only open with the right key, which makes it tougher to pick or drill and more reliable in bad weather. For folks parking at farms, campgrounds, or storage lots, it adds real peace of mind. And if you don’t run a Hit-N-Hitch coupler, ICON has plenty of other locks built specifically for different coupler types, so you can get the same level of protection.

  • Do Alter Icon Trailer Coupler Locks Add Tongue Weight To Trailer? How Much Do They Weigh?
Olivia, each ICON weighs around 20lbs depending on the model. That heft is what makes them tough to tamper with. You’ll notice the weight when you lift it, but once installed on the coupler, it doesn’t affect anything. And it gets removed obviously when you tow the trailer, so it won't be adding tongue weight or anything like that (unless you throw it in a tool box at the front of the trailer or in the bed of your truck behind the rear axle - then it would count towards tongue weight). Do...

  • What Makes Alter ICON Trailer Coupler Locks Better Than Other Options?
Pam, good question. The big differences are: patented radial fins that block grinders up to 5", one-piece hardened steel (not welded), an anti-drill face that spins drill bits, and a disc-detainer key that’s almost impossible to pick. It’s the only trailer lock lineup designed to resist power tools, not just hammers and bolt cutters. All in all, I'd spend the money on this bad boy if you have an expensive trailer with expensive equipment in it, or just want to make sure you have the best...

  • Which Coupler Lock Fits 2022 Lakota Horse Trailer With Hit-N-Hitch Coupler?
Madison, yes - that’s exactly what the # AL43DQ was engineered for. Hit-N-Hitch couplers have an auto-latching profile that most locks don’t cover properly. ICON’s finned design blocks grinder access while wrapping that unique housing. With a Lakota, you’re protecting not just the trailer but valuable horses inside, and this is one of the toughest locks you could use. Do you camp at events where the trailer is unattended overnight?

  • Lock For Hit-N-Hitch Coupler On 2021 Sundowner Horse Trailer
Courtney, once the # AL43DQ is in place, it completely covers the latch housing. That’s intentional - thieves can’t access the latch or the ball cavity. To hook up, you’ll remove the lock (takes just seconds with the key) then re-install when you unhitch. You may be getting confused with a lock pin that goes in the coupler's latch and that can stay on when you're towing. Something like Trimax Adjustable Trailer Coupler Latch Lock - 1/4" Pin - 7/8" to 3-1/2" Spans # TMX98SR. Do you typically...

  • Is The ICON Trailer Coupler Lock Hard To Install?
Troy, some ICONs are snug because they’re precision-cast, but that’s part of their security. The # AL43DQ slides on pretty smoothly over the Hit-N-Hitch profile. The lock core uses a disc-detainer “outdoor profile” key that's designed to resist picking and survive in the elements. I've attached a demonstration video for you, but basically you'll unscrew (by hand) the metal cap covering the key hole, then unlock it and slide the pin down, place it on in your coupler and latch it in place,...

  • Lock For Equipment Trailer With Hit and Hitch Coupler
Hey there Tim! Yeah, sometimes universal locks don't work on niche couplers such as the hit n hitch couplers. For that reason, ICON has created a custom fit heavy duty lock (best one you'll find!) for the hit-n-hitch lineup. You can use the ICON Trailer Coupler Lock for Hit-N-Hitch 2-5/16" Ball Coupler # AL43DQ. I've attached a demonstration video for you to check out.

  • Can I Use Same ICON Lock For Gooseneck Coupler And Hit-N-Hitch Coupler On Utility Trailer?
Lonnie, no, each ICON model is cut to a specific style and size. For your gooseneck, you’d want an actual gooseneck coupler lock which is dependent on what style you have (let me know and I'll find one). Then for your hit-n-hitch coupler, which is very specific, it has it's own style lock with the # AL43DQ. It’s not as convenient as one lock for all, but that precision is why they’re so secure. Do you want keyed-alike options for convenience, or maximum unique-key security?

  • Will Universal Or Custom Fit Lock Be Better For Hit N Hitch Coupler On Sundowner Horse Trailer?
Megan, go with the # AL43DQ. Universals are loose on Hit-N-Hitch, leaving gaps for pry bars, and sometimes they don't work at all. ICON molds this one specifically for that coupler’s auto-latch profile, so I'd definitely spend the extra coin on a good one, especially since you need your trailer safe and sound for your beloved horsies / giant ponies. You’ll also get the weather-sealed disc-detainer key system, which stays smooth even with barn dust. Do you park at showgrounds often, or...

  • Should Trailer Dealers Order ICON Coupler Locks For Hit-N-Hitch Couplers Or Standard Couplers Onlyl?
Tony, I'd say so! The Hit-N-Hitch style has grown in popularity on mid-size RV and livestock trailers. Generic locks usually don’t fit them right, so having the # AL43DQ gives you a true solution to point customers toward if they have that coupler. If you don't already carry the more common standard ones, I'd recommend ordering some of the flat-lip # AL63DQ and cast # AL38DQ models. Those will likely be more popular for the average customer, unless they have the specific Hit-N-Hitch coupler...
